Cabin Air Filter

Car part Category: Filters DIY difficulty: Easy (DIY)

What it is

The cabin air filter cleans the air coming into the passenger compartment through the heating and A/C vents. It is one of the easiest, cheapest maintenance items.

What it does

It traps dust, pollen and soot before they reach you. A clogged filter weakens airflow from the vents, causes odours and fogging, and makes the blower work harder.

Symptoms of failure

  • Weak airflow from the vents
  • Musty or dusty smell in the cabin
  • Windows fogging up more than usual
  • More dust and allergens inside
  • Whistling or louder blower noise

Which vehicles need it

Most cars from the late 1990s on. It usually hides behind the glovebox.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change the cabin air filter?

About every 12,000–15,000 miles or once a year, sooner in dusty areas or heavy pollen. It is cheap and usually a quick DIY job behind the glovebox.

Why do my A/C vents smell musty?

A clogged, damp cabin filter is a common cause of musty vent odours. Replacing it (and using an evaporator cleaner) usually clears the smell and restores airflow.
