Wheel Bearing

Car part Category: Brakes & Suspension DIY difficulty: Moderate–Hard (DIY)

What it is

A wheel bearing lets the wheel spin smoothly on the hub with very little friction while carrying the car's weight. Many modern cars use a sealed hub assembly with the bearing built in.

What it does

It supports the wheel and allows it to rotate freely. A worn bearing makes a growling or humming noise that changes with speed and cornering, and a badly worn one can cause play, ABS faults or even wheel failure.

Symptoms of failure

  • Humming or growling that rises with speed
  • Noise that changes when you turn left vs right
  • Wheel play or a loose feel
  • ABS light (bearing-integrated sensor disturbed)
  • Uneven tyre wear or vibration

Which vehicles need it

Every car. Sealed hub-bearing assemblies are common on modern vehicles; potholes and curb hits shorten their life.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which wheel bearing is bad?

Listen to how the hum changes when cornering: a bad bearing usually gets louder when weight shifts onto it. If it is quieter turning left, the right bearing is likely the culprit, and vice versa.

Is it safe to drive with a noisy wheel bearing?

A light hum can last a while, but a badly worn bearing can develop play, overheat, trigger ABS faults, and in rare cases let the wheel fail. Replace it before it gets loud or loose.
