VIN decoder FAQ
What is a VIN?
The Vehicle Identification Number is a unique 17-character code stamped on every modern vehicle. It encodes the country of origin, manufacturer, model year, assembly plant and a serial number.
Where do I find my VIN?
Look at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side, on the driver’s door jamb sticker, on your registration and insurance documents, or stamped on the engine bay/firewall.
Why can’t a VIN contain I, O or Q?
Those letters are excluded to avoid confusion with the digits 1 and 0. If your VIN seems to contain them, you’ve likely misread a 1 or a 0.
Does this decoder show my exact trim and engine?
No. This is a structural decode of the VIN itself — it reads what the 17 characters encode (country, maker, year, plant). Exact trim, engine and options come from manufacturer databases, which this free tool does not query.
What is the check digit?
The 9th character is a calculated check digit used mainly on North-American VINs to catch typos. Our tool recomputes it and tells you whether it matches.
