Brake Pads
What it is
Brake pads are the friction blocks the caliper squeezes against the brake rotor to slow the car. They are a normal wear item that needs periodic replacement.
What it does
They convert the car's motion into heat through friction to stop you. As they wear thin, braking gets weaker and noisier, and a worn-out pad will damage the rotor and cut into safety.
Symptoms of failure
- Squealing or grinding when braking
- Longer stopping distance
- Brake warning light or wear-indicator chirp
- Vibration or a hard/low pedal
- Visible thin pad through the wheel
Which vehicles need it
Every car. Fronts wear faster than rears; city and hilly driving shortens pad life.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know when brake pads need replacing?
Squealing from the wear indicator, grinding, longer stops, or a brake warning are the signs. Many pads have about 3 mm of friction material left at the replacement point — check through the wheel.
Should I replace brake pads and rotors together?
Not always, but if the rotors are below spec, scored or warped, replace them with the pads. New pads on bad rotors will be noisy and wear quickly.
