Fuel Filter
What it is
The fuel filter traps dirt and rust before fuel reaches the injectors. Some are inline and serviceable; others sit inside the tank with the pump module.
What it does
It protects the injectors and keeps fuel flowing cleanly. A clogged filter restricts flow, causing hard starting, power loss under load, stalling and low-pressure codes such as P0087.
Symptoms of failure
- Low fuel pressure code P0087
- Hesitation or power loss under load or uphill
- Hard starting or stalling
- Rough running at high RPM
- Whining fuel pump (working harder against a clog)
Common fault codes
Which vehicles need it
All fuel-injected vehicles; diesels especially depend on a clean fuel filter. Many modern petrol cars use a lifetime in-tank filter.
Replacement cost
| DIY (part only) | $10–$60 |

| At a shop (parts + labor) | $80–$250 |
| Replacement interval | Inline petrol filters often every 30,000 miles; diesel filters more often; in-tank filters usually only on failure. |
| DIY difficulty | Easy–Moderate (DIY) for inline filters; in-tank filters need tank access |

Frequently asked questions
What are the symptoms of a clogged fuel filter?
Hesitation and power loss under load, hard starting, stalling and sometimes a P0087 low-pressure code. The engine may run fine at light load but starve when you ask for power.
How often should I change the fuel filter?
Serviceable inline petrol filters are often every ~30,000 miles, diesels more often. Many modern cars use a non-serviceable in-tank filter that is only replaced if it fails — check your manual.
