Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor
What it is
The MAP sensor reads the pressure (vacuum) inside the intake manifold. It is mounted on or near the manifold and is a key input on speed-density engines and most turbocharged engines.
What it does
By measuring manifold pressure it tells the computer how hard the engine is working (load), so the computer can set fuelling and timing. A faulty MAP sensor causes poor performance, bad economy, black smoke or hesitation, and sets P0106–P0108.

- P0106, P0107 or P0108 MAP codes
- Hesitation, surging or lack of power

What is the difference between a MAP and a MAF sensor?
A MAF measures the mass of air entering the engine in the intake duct; a MAP measures pressure inside the manifold. Some engines use one, some use both. They trigger different codes (P0101 vs P0106).
Can a vacuum leak cause a MAP code?
Yes. A cracked vacuum hose or leaking gasket changes manifold pressure and can throw a MAP performance code even when the sensor itself is fine — always inspect hoses first.
