Transmission Shift Solenoid
What it is
Shift solenoids are electrically controlled valves inside an automatic transmission that direct hydraulic fluid to engage each gear. The valve body holds several of them.
What it does
They let the transmission computer control shifting. A stuck or failed solenoid causes harsh, late or missed shifts, being stuck in one gear, or limp mode, and triggers transmission codes — often the generic P0700 along with a specific solenoid code.
Symptoms of failure
- P0700 (transmission control system) and solenoid-specific codes
- Harsh, delayed or erratic shifts
- Stuck in one gear / limp mode
- No upshift or no downshift
- Slipping between gears
Common fault codes
Which vehicles need it
Automatic-transmission vehicles. Dirty fluid and electrical faults are common causes; some solenoids are serviced as a valve-body unit.
Replacement cost
| DIY (part only) | $30–$150 |

| At a shop (parts + labor) | $250–$700 |
| Replacement interval | No set interval — keep fluid fresh; replace on failure. |
| DIY difficulty | Moderate–Hard (DIY) — drop the pan to reach the valve body; varies by transmission |

Frequently asked questions
Can a shift solenoid be replaced without rebuilding the transmission?
Often yes — many solenoids are accessible by dropping the pan and removing or replacing the valve body, without a full rebuild. The exact job depends on your transmission.
What does P0700 mean?
P0700 is a generic flag that the transmission control module has set a fault and turned on the check engine light. You need to read the transmission-specific code (e.g. a shift solenoid code) alongside it to find the real problem.
