Torque Converter
What it is
The torque converter is the fluid coupling between the engine and an automatic transmission. Its lock-up clutch links the two solidly at cruise for efficiency.
What it does
It transmits engine power to the transmission and multiplies torque from a stop. A failing converter or stuck lock-up clutch causes shuddering, slipping, stalling at stops and code P0741.
Symptoms of failure
- P0741 (torque converter clutch stuck off / performance)
- Shudder or vibration around 40–50 mph at light throttle
- Slipping or flaring shifts
- Stalling when coming to a stop
- Higher fuel consumption
Common fault codes
Which vehicles need it
Automatic-transmission vehicles. Old or burnt transmission fluid is a leading cause of converter clutch problems.

Frequently asked questions
What does a torque converter shudder feel like?
A rhythmic shudder or vibration — like driving over rumble strips — usually around 40–50 mph at light throttle when the lock-up clutch engages. Fresh fluid sometimes helps; a P0741 confirms it.
Can fresh transmission fluid fix a P0741?
Sometimes, if the fluid is old and the converter clutch is just shuddering. If the clutch or solenoid has actually failed, you need a repair, but a fluid service is a cheap first step.
