Clutch
What it is
In a manual transmission, the clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox so you can shift gears and pull away. It is a wear item that lasts as long as your driving style allows.
What it does
It engages smoothly to transfer power and disengages when you press the pedal. A worn clutch slips (revs rise without speed), grabs, or makes shifting hard, and eventually leaves you unable to drive.
Symptoms of failure
- Slipping — engine revs climb but speed does not
- High or soft clutch pedal, or a change in bite point
- Difficulty getting into gear
- Burning smell after hill starts or towing
- Shuddering when pulling away
Which vehicles need it
Manual-transmission vehicles. City driving, towing and riding the clutch shorten its life.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my clutch is slipping?
In a high gear at low speed, accelerate firmly: if the engine revs climb faster than the car speeds up, the clutch is slipping. A burning smell and a raised bite point are other classic signs.
Should I replace the whole clutch kit?
Yes. Since the transmission is already out, replace the disc, pressure plate and release bearing together as a kit, and resurface or replace the flywheel — it avoids a repeat of the biggest cost: the labour.
