Volkswagen Tiguan Towing Capacity (by Engine & Year)
TL;DR
Every US-spec Tiguan, regardless of trim or drivetrain, is rated at 1,500 lb max trailer weight and 150 lb max tongue weight.
How much can a Volkswagen Tiguan tow?
Unlike full-size SUVs or trucks, the Tiguan does not have multiple towing tiers based on engine or tow package. Across every model year checked (2022, 2024 and 2025) and every trim - S, SE, SE R-Line Black, SEL R-Line, Wolfsburg Edition - in both FWD and 4MOTION all-wheel drive, Volkswagen lists the same rating.
Verified figures
| Generation / years | Engine & configuration | Max towing (lb / kg) |
|---|---|---|
| Second generation (2018-2024, US market) | 2.0T, FWD or 4MOTION AWD, all trims | 1,500 lb / 680 kg |
| Third generation (2025-present, US market) | 2.0T, FWD or 4MOTION AWD, all trims | 1,500 lb / 680 kg |
Maximum tongue weight is 150 lb (68 kg) for both a dead-weight (standard) hitch and a weight-distributing hitch, on both generations checked.
Why the number does not change by trim
The Tiguan uses one turbocharged 2.0T engine across the lineup and VW does not sell a factory heavy-duty towing package for it (unlike the larger Atlas). That is why the trailering figure stays flat instead of scaling with horsepower or drivetrain the way it would on a full-size SUV.
Note on the earlier first-generation Tiguan
The first-generation Tiguan (sold in the US roughly 2009-2017) is a different platform and we could not corroborate a reliable towing figure for it from a credible source in this review. If you own one of those model years, read the rating directly off your vehicle rather than relying on a generic number.
Always confirm on your own vehicle
Ratings can be revised between production runs and by region. Before hitching up a trailer, confirm the exact figures for your specific vehicle using these authoritative sources:
- The driver-side door jamb placard (also lists GVWR and payload)
- Your owner's manual towing section
- The manufacturer towing guide for your exact model year
- A dealer parts/service department, which can look up your VIN-specific build

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum towing capacity of a Volkswagen Tiguan?
Across the model years and trims we verified (2022, 2024, 2025), Volkswagen lists 1,500 lb (680 kg) as the maximum trailering capacity for every US-spec Tiguan, whether FWD or 4MOTION AWD.
Does a 4MOTION AWD Tiguan tow more than the FWD version?
No. In the model years checked, VW lists the identical 1,500 lb trailering capacity and 150 lb tongue weight for both FWD and 4MOTION AWD Tiguan trims - the drivetrain does not change the rating.
Is there a towing package that increases the Tiguan's rating?
VW does not offer a heavier-duty factory towing package for the Tiguan the way it does on larger models like the Atlas, which is why the trailering figure is flat across the lineup in the years we checked.
What is the maximum tongue weight for a Tiguan?
150 lb (68 kg), for both a dead-weight (standard) hitch and a weight-distributing hitch, in the model years we verified (2022, 2024, 2025).
